Evidence of active magmatic rifting at the Ma’Alalta volcanic field (Afar, Ethiopia)

چکیده
Abstract During continental rifting, strain and magmatism are believed to localize narrow magmatic segments, while the rift margin is progressively abandoned. We integrate volcanological, geochemical, petrological seismic data from Ma’Alalta volcanic field (MVF) near western of Afar, show that MVF an active segment. Magmatism in initiated with lava flows large-volume, caldera-forming ignimbrites a central edifice. However, most recent activity shifted towards mafic fields, cinder cones obsidian-rich silicic domes erupted vents aligned NNW-SSE, defining ~ 35-km-long Along same area, NNW-SSE alignment earthquakes was recorded by two local networks (2005–2009 2011–2013). The geochemistry rocks similar those nearby axial volcanoes. Inferred magma storage depth mineral geobarometry shows shallow, chamber existed at 5-km below stratovolcano, stacked plumbing system least three levels between 9 24 km fed basalts. interpret wide set observations as evidence area segment, showing localised extension can be heavily offset margin.

Large mantle magma reservoir of Afar, Ethiopia
Most of the Earth’s crust is created at midoceanic ridges where two tectonic plates move away from each other, known as constructive plate boundary system and extends for ∼60,000 km around the globe (Wright et al., 2006). It creates characteristic extensional structures, wherein tectonic stress is primarily released by rifting processes, which thus forms major system of normal faults and volcan...
متن کاملPhylogeny of early Australopithecus: new fossil evidence from the Woranso-Mille (central Afar, Ethiopia).
The earliest evidence of Australopithecus goes back to ca 4.2 Ma with the first recorded appearance of Australopithecus 'anamensis' at Kanapoi, Kenya. Australopithecus afarensis is well documented between 3.6 and 3.0 Ma mainly from deposits at Laetoli (Tanzania) and Hadar (Ethiopia). The phylogenetic relationship of these two 'species' is hypothesized as ancestor-descendant. However, the lack o...
متن کاملRaw material selectivity of the earliest stone toolmakers at Gona, Afar, Ethiopia.
Published evidence of Oldowan stone exploitation generally supports the conclusion that patterns of raw material use were determined by local availability. This is contradicted by the results of systematic studies of raw material availability and use among the earliest known archaeological sites from Gona, Afar, Ethiopia. Artifact assemblages from six Pliocene archaeological sites were compared...
متن کاملMagmatic vapor source for sulfur dioxide released during volcanic eruptions: evidence from mount pinatubo.
Sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) released by the explosive eruption of Mount Pinatubo on 15 June 1991 had an impact on climate and stratospheric ozone. The total mass of SO(2) released was much greater than the amount dissolved in the magma before the eruption, and thus an additional source for the excess SO(2) is required. Infrared spectroscopic analyses of dissolved water and carbon dioxide in glass in...
متن کاملTechnological variation in the earliest Oldowan from Gona, Afar, Ethiopia.
Inter-site technological variation in the archaeological record is one of the richest potential sources of information about Plio-Pleistocene hominid behavior and evolution. However, appropriate methods for describing and comparing Oldowan assemblages have yet to be agreed upon, and interpretation of the early record remains highly controversial. Particularly salient is disagreement over whethe...
